Science to the Station: A Health & Wellness Alliance

What is the Science to the Station initiative, and how does it impact members of Women in Fire?

Instead of relying on anecdotal comments or assumptions, the materials produced by Science to the Station (S2S) are grounded in scientific evidence.

Science to the Station, also known as The Science Alliance, is a collaborative effort involving scientists, healthcare professionals, and fire service experts. Their primary goal is to disseminate vital information aimed at enhancing the safety and well-being of firefighters and other first responders. Women in Fire is a component of this broader alliance. Thanks to funding from FEMA's Fire Prevention and Safety grant, we've partnered with NDRI-USA and other Science to the Station affiliates to conduct research, develop programs, and disseminate our findings nationwide.

Currently, our offerings include educational resources on reproductive health tailored for both men and women, as well as materials for their healthcare providers. We also offer in-person and online courses focused on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the fire service. These courses cater to firefighters at various levels, from frontline responders to company officers and administrators, ensuring accessibility for all. Additionally, we're actively researching best practices for fire department recruitment and retention, with a specific focus on the role of fire camps in these efforts.

Coming soon, we will have a new mentoring program with mentors trained and available for leadership, career advancement, reproductive health, and recruitment and retention efforts.
