Position Title: Entry Level Firefighter/ Lateral Firefighter
North Whatcom Fire and Rescue is currently hiring for Entry Level and/or Lateral Firefighter. All entry level candidates must complete the FireTEAM exam and CPAT through National Testing Network. All entry level candidates must also complete the Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) and the Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA) located in your candidate profile on National Testing Network by March 1, 2024.
The FireTEAM exam is waived for Lateral candidates. All lateral candidates must have a current CPAT passing score.
2024 Salary Information:
Entry Level $6,866.00 – $8,691.00 (Entry level – Journeyman)
Lateral $7,648.00 – $8,691.00 (2nd year FF – Journeyman)
2024 Salary Information: Based on 2023-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement: Appendix A.

Department Overview: North Whatcom Fire and Rescue serves 182 square miles in the north end of Whatcom County consisting of the City of Blaine, Birch Bay, the surrounding areas of the City of Lynden, and south to boundaries of the City of Bellingham. NWFR is a primarily career department with the addition of limited volunteers, a tender group and rehab group. North Whatcom Fire and Rescue line personnel are represented by IAFF Local 106.
City/ County/ Area Information: Whatcom County lies in the furthest northwest corner of both the State of Washington and the continental United States. It is bordered on the north by the Canadian border, on the east by Okanogan County, on the south by Skagit County and on the west by the Strait of Georgia and Bellingham Bay. These borders enclose large parts of the Mount Baker National Forest and the North Cascades National Park, which comprise about 2/3rds of Whatcom County’s total area. All but a few residents live in the western third of the county. Cities of Whatcom County include Bellingham, Blaine, Everson, Ferndale, Lynden, Nooksack and Sumas. The communities of Whatcom County reflect the region’s geographical diversity, rich natural resources and unique historical and cultural character.

Additional Requirements: Passing score on CPAT.
Lateral: Two years paid municipal or fire district experience in LEOFF 2 system.
Entry Level Hiring Process: Qualified candidates will complete the NTN written exam with a 75% or higher score. Interview process will consist of a speed interview, oral board interview and Chief’s interview. All candidates must have a current WA state or National Registry EMT license and have a current passing score on CPAT. Candidates invited to the oral board interviews must complete the PHQ by a given date prior to their interview.
