The Gurnee Fire Department provides 24-hour fire and rescue services to approximately 60,000 residents, with a daytime population in excess of 150,000, in a 30 square mile area. The department runs calls out of three stations. In 2021, the department responded to 7,227 calls, of which approximately 1/3rd were fire and 2/3rd were EMS based, including rescue calls, car accidents, and specialized rescues.
All firefighters are also required to be licensed paramedics. In addition to the day to day operations of firefighting, EMS, and training in both areas, the Fire Department is also proactively involved in Fire Prevention, Public Education, Public Safety, Gurnee Days, and Specialized Rescue (including Dive Rescue, Hazardous Materials, High Angle, Confined Space, Trench, and Structural Collapse).
This position performs job duties and tasks involving response to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, and other emergency calls to protect life and property; participates in fire training, fire prevention, public education, and station and equipment maintenance activities; operates a paramedic unit in response to medical emergencies and provides medical care. An employee in this position may be assigned to work on projects or other assignments requiring specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications:
Minimum age 21 years and maximum age of 34 years (unless otherwise exempt per state statute).
State of Illinois Basic Operations Firefighter (Firefighter II) certification.
Minimally a Paramedic Student in good standing or EMT-P. If a Paramedic Student, must obtain IDPH EMT-P licensure within 6 months of hire.
Valid driver’s license.
Candidate Physical Ability Test [CPAT] certificate with Ladder Climb dated between September 19, 2022 and September 20, 2023. The cost of the CPAT process is the responsibility of the candidate.
Successfully pass the FireTeam examination offered through National Testing Network.
United States citizen or naturalized citizen.
Graduation from high school or equivalent thereof.
Selection Process – each phase of the process is pass / fail and required to proceed to the next.

Oral Interview with Civil Service Commission – eligible applicants will be contacted to schedule an interview. Interviews are anticipated to be held in September / October 2023.
Preference points – maximum of 10 points:
Veterans’ Points / Military Service with an Honorable Discharge: 5 points
Education Points: up to 5 points:
Associates Degree (fire service or emergency medical services): 2.5 points
Bachelors Degree (any curriculum): an additional 2.5 points (5 points total)
Final Eligibility list candidates receiving an offer of employment must successfully pass all post-offer screenings including but not limited to a polygraph examination; background investigation; psychological examination; and medical examination, including vision and drug screen.
