Essential Functions 

  • Suppresses fires to preserve lives and property.
  • Provides pre-hospital care at the basic and/or advanced life support level.
  • Maintains advanced life support, equipment, supplies and drugs as required.
  • Drives and operates the fire engine as assigned when the Captain or Driver is absent upon completion of step-up process.
  • Performs maintenance and minor repair work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains all equipment in a functional condition.
  • Maintains the station which includes housekeeping and repairs.
  • Conducts tours, talks, demonstrations and classes to educate the public on fire safety.
  • Participates in continuing training classes.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

Experience

  •  Six months to one year of experience preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of fire prevention, suppression, and rescue techniques.
  • Knowledge of department rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of building types, construction and street locations within the City.
  • Knowledge of pre-hospital advanced life support techniques.

Ability to:

  • Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
  • Ability to follow instructions, safety practices and standard operating procedures in performing assigned tasks.
  • Ability to be punctual and attend work regularly
  • Ability to work effectively with people regardless of their age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or job type.
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to remain calm and decisive under extreme stress.
  • Ability to distinguish between red, yellow, and green in order to identify traffic lights and sign colors.
  • Ability to successfully pass a written exam and validated physical agility test.
  • Ability to pass background investigation.

Skills

  • Skill in use of personal computer including Microsoft Office, Open Office or similar word processing programs, e-mail and the internet.
  • Skill in use of firefighting equipment and techniques.

Special Requirements 

  • Certified Firefighter/EMT by hire date.
  • Be at least 18 years of age by the date of the test.
  • Be a high school graduate or have obtained a G.E.D.
  • Have no felony convictions, or a history of misdemeanor convictions of such that would indicate a habitual law violator.
  • Be subjected to a search of records to disclose a criminal record.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record as defined by City policy.
  • An applicant who does not possess a Texas Driver’s License or proper class, will be allowed ten (10) working days after a job offer is made to obtain proper licensing.
  • Have visual acuity needed to discern traffic signs and house numbers from approximately 50 feet, often in dim light.
  • Be able to distinguish between the colors red, yellow, and green.
  • Be able to successfully pass a validated physical ability test.
  • Be able to pass post-offer physical, psychological, drug test, and polygraph.
  • All candidates must pass a comprehensive background investigation.
