Independence is a full-service charter city operating under a council-manager form of government. Appointed to the position of City Manager in 2016, Zachary Walker oversees all day-to-day operations, including 13 departments, 1,100 employees and an annual operating budget of approximately $300 million.
The Independence Fire Department is the 3rd busiest fire department in the state of Missouri, has a Class 2 ISO rating, and operates with 6 divisions, 10 fire stations, 192 personnel and an operating budget of $34.7 million. The Fire Chief reports directly to the City Manager.
Qualified candidates will have a BA/BS degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration or related field as well as 10 years of progressively responsible fire operations experience, including a minimum of 5 years at the command level. Completion of NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800 training would be required within 6 months of employment. A bachelor’s degree combined with relevant experience that demonstrates the candidate’s ability to perform the duties of this position may be considered.
Preferred qualifications include certification from the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer program or equivalent, experience in a unionized labor environment, City residency, and a Master’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Business, Public Administration, or related field.
The salary range for this position is $140,000 to $160,000 with starting salary dependent upon experience and qualifications. Comprehensive Benefit Package includes Missouri Local Government Employees Retirement System (LAGERS), paid exempt and personal business leave in addition to paid holidays, vacation and sick leave. This position is also eligible for relocation assistance, automobile and phone allowance.
